Explorers are young people aged 14 to 18 years, with more independence, leadership opportunities, and challenging adventures

Explorer Scouts, supported by leaders, frequently take the initiative in planning and executing their own activities. This provides opportunities to cultivate crucial life skills, enhance leadership abilities, and build resilience. Their engagement extends to outdoor pursuits, fostering a connection with nature. Through collaborative ambitious projects and overcoming challenges, Explorers develop strong bonds and increase their self-assurance. A diverse selection of badges is available, recognizing accomplishments in adventure, skill development, and personal interests, as well as significant undertakings such as expeditions. Explorers can also pursue prestigious accolades like the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and the King’s Scout Award.

Who are Explorers and what do they get up to?

Explorers are a go-getting group of young people aged 14 to 18. Together, they make up the fifth section of the Scouts.

  • Discover the world

  • Start small, but think big

  • Exploring the great outdoors

  • Seek out the answers to the big questions

Week in and week out, they gather in groups called Units to try new things, make new friends and conquer the small task of changing the world.

Explorers uniforms

Uniform can either be bought from our online shop - Scout Store - or from a local supplier. If you’re stuck, ask adult volunteers to tell you more about what to buy and where to buy it. If cost is an issue, they will be more than happy to help. We have a small amount of second hand uniform, if you would like to request any items please get in touch.

Once you’ve had time to settle in, you’ll get your own uniform to wear during meetings and on trips away. Explorers usually wear a beige shirt or blouse with their badges sewn on, which they pair with their Unit or Group scarf. They might wear blue uniform trousers or a skirt, or they might save their uniform bottoms for special occasions like awards ceremonies and public events – choosing to wear something more casual with their shirt during the week. More information on uniform can be found here.
